Starting at 5:00 p.m. on September 29th, in Auditorium 1 of the FPCEUP, the book launch of 50 Anos de Ensino em Democracia: Histórias de Inovação e Persistência [50 Years of Teaching in Democracy: Stories of Innovation and Persistence] (Afrontamento Editions) will take place.
Amélia Lopes, Luciana Joana, and Rita Tavares Sousa are the editors.
Professor António Gomes Ferreira of the University of Coimbra will give the presentation.
April 25th gave rise to a powerful mobilisation of the population for education. Many young people, who had chosen teaching, but also medicine, economics, engineering, or other higher education programs, inspired by the collective hope that democracy brought, decided to change course and invest in what they felt was closest to "changing the world"—education. This book brings together 96 life narratives of teachers who began their careers shortly before or shortly after April 25th, 1974, and were known among their colleagues for being committed educators. Their professional life stories are, therefore, the story of the change in education in Portugal during democracy, told by those who effectively shaped it. (Excerpt from the synopsis)
