Universidade do Porto, through the Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas (CIIE) of the Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto (FPCEUP), has opened a call for applications for one Research Grant (BI) for a PhD student, within the scope of the project “NorteIA+: Transparent and Safe Artificial Intelligence for a More Human and Competitive Future” (NORTE2030-FEDER-02724200).
The project is co-funded by the Northern Regional Programme 2021–2027 (NORTE2030), Portugal 2030, and the European Union. It is locally coordinated by Professor Paulo Marinho.
Project Objective
NORTEIA+ aims to contribute to a more socially cohesive and competitive Northern region of Portugal by promoting the conscious, informed, ethical, and responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence, particularly in the areas of:

The project brings together a multidisciplinary team from U.Porto in the fields of Computer Science, Culture, Law, Education, Philosophy, Linguistics and Translation, Health, and Sociology.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must:

Hold a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences or in Educational Technologies

Be enrolled in a PhD programme in Educational Sciences

Demonstrate proficiency in Portuguese (when applicable)

Demonstrate proficiency in English
(If the Master’s degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be formally recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution by the time of contract signing.)
Preferred Qualifications

Research experience, particularly in areas related to the project
-
Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
-
Experience using SPSS, NVivo, and Learning Management Systems (LMS)
- (Co)authorship of scientific publications in education or social sciences
- Availability for frequent travel within Portugal
Work Plan
The selected fellow will support research and development activities, including:

Conducting literature reviews
-
Collecting, processing, and analysing data, particularly in mapping and systematising AI knowledge and practices in education

Supporting the design and implementation of open and distance learning environments (MOOCs) in the fields of industry, health, and education
-
Contributing to scientific reports and articles, and presenting work at scientific meetings
-
Supporting the organisation of meetings and dissemination events
-
Assisting in project management and research dissemination activities
Workplace
The work will be carried out in Porto, at the premises of CIIE/FPCEUP, or at other locations necessary for the implementation of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of Professor Paulo Marinho.
Duration
The grant will last 10 months, starting in April 2026 (estimated), under an exclusive dedication regime.
It may be renewed, depending on institutional needs and available funding, up to the maximum duration of the project and within the legal limits for this type of grant.
