Education 2030 takes up the unfinished agenda of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the right to Education for All (EFA) and stresses the importance of cooperation to promote access to education for the most vulnerable and marginalised, inclusion and equity, gender equality and the quality of education and training. There is an urgent need to critically reflect on the complexity, implementation perspectives and implications of the 2030 Agenda for cooperation policies and practices and for their appropriation in the University, reinforcing its role in quality development cooperation, capable of contributing to poverty eradication initiatives and human development. Research on development co-operation in the field of education is scarce in our country. This work presupposes, firstly, the construction of an epistemology of development co-operation, where the current principles of alignment, ownership, sustainability and results-orientation are fundamental.

Stemming from a dialogue between the Nossa Senhora da Paz School (Cuito-Bié) and FPCEUP's Centre for Educational Research and Intervention (CIIE), this initiative aims to carry out a qualitative study on the educational context of Bié province, focusing on teacher training, taking into account the sector's development policies in Angola and the current 2030 Development Agenda. Thus, the study's general objectives are: to map development cooperation initiatives in the area of education in Bié; to characterise teacher training in the province; and to promote the dimension of research in education and development. To this end, the aim is to identify co-operation projects that act directly or indirectly in the area of education in Bié; learn about co-operation models in the area of teacher training in the province; co-construct a development co-operation project in the area of teacher training at the Nossa Senhora da Paz School; characterise teacher training in the province of Bié, taking into account training models, the curriculum, the profile of trainers and trainees, taking into account gender issues in particular; identify constraints and facilitating variables in teacher training; find out about existing research networks in the field of education; and mobilise education specialists and other educational development agents in the context in question for this research.

The team will be made up of a group of researchers from CIIE (Portugal) and the partners in Angola, namely the Principal of the Nossa Senhora da Paz School, the head of the Cuito Bié Municipal Directorate of Education and the Principal of the Huíla Primary School. In addition to collaborative work at different stages of the research, the research involves travelling to the field to liaise directly with the partners.

The work is expected to result in: a mapping of existing cooperation actions; a set of recommendations for promoting quality cooperation in education; a mapping of the educational context, with a focus on teacher training; the creation of a community of practice for research in education and development (in partnership with local institutions); and the dissemination of the knowledge produced, through the public presentation of the results in the contexts involved (FPCEUP and Bié province), the publication of scientific articles and other materials and the publicising of the project at meetings and on digital platforms.
