The main aim of this research project is to recover and document the contributions of invisible women during the 25 April and post-25 April periods in the history of Portuguese democracy (1092-1979). Focusing on the historiography of women from the working and popular classes, as well as subalternized groups, and their participation in social movements, the research will be conducted using the approach of oral history and memorial records. By collecting the personal narratives, testimonies and memories of these women, who are often absent from conventional historical records, the aim is to recover their stories and highlight their significant role in the social movements of the period. Special attention will be paid to women associated with the Cape Verdean, Mozambican and Angolan communities, given that their contributions to the construction of Portuguese democracy have been even more minimised or ignored than those of Portuguese women. The research aims to fill historiographical gaps, highlighting the fundamental role of these women in the political and social transformation of the country. By prioritising oral history and memorial records, the project aims to amplify and preserve the voices and memories of these women, ensuring that their contributions to the development of democracy in Portugal during and after the 25 April Revolution are recognised and valued.
In addition to the historical recovery of the participation of women from socially disadvantaged sectors, we believe it is crucial to carry out some activities with young people in order to involve them in building knowledge and disseminating knowledge about 25 April: to find out what they know, how they acquired this knowledge and what their opinions are; to listen to their ideas on how best to disseminate this knowledge to new generations.
The methodology includes various procedures: a) for collecting information: research in archives, newspapers and other publications from the time; interviews to collect oral testimonies, focus discussion groups and workshops with young people; b) for analysing: drawing up biographical narratives, historical narratives and digital narratives.
The research will focus on the period between 1972 and 1979. 1972 is a historic date for women - it corresponds to the publication of the New Portuguese Letters; 1979 saw the acquittal of Maria Antónia Palla, who had been indicted for having made a report on clandestine abortion on RTP in 1974. This is when women's rights took the longest to be won.
The project also includes activities with young people through focus groups and workshops: focus groups to understand what they know about women's participation in 25 April, how they acquired this knowledge (who passed it on to them - family, school, peers or others) and their opinions; workshops to co-construct a didactic audiovisual document about women and 25 April.
Young people's ideas can be vital to making the document appealing to different ages.
