The NORTE IA+ project primarily aims to contribute to the development of a more socially oriented and competitive Northern region. To this end, the project seeks to promote a conscious, informed, responsible and ethical use of generative AI, particularly in the fields of education, industry and health, leading to a more efficient, effective, safe, ethical and responsible use of generative AI.
In the social domain, NORTE IA+ aims to enhance citizens’ quality of life by promoting equitable access to healthcare, education, and employment. Examples include increasing accessibility to primary healthcare for non-Portuguese speakers (a context in which generative AI technologies frequently serve as communication tools), promoting an inclusive education model in the Northern region, and investing in training both for end-users and for SMEs and start-ups, with a view to technological innovation, global competitiveness, and improved access to employment.
In the industrial sector, NORTE IA+ seeks to boost the competitiveness of regional companies through smart specialisation. To this end, the project aims to maximise the benefits of digitalisation to drive sustainable growth and competitiveness, always in compliance with applicable governance and regulatory principles.
In pursuing these objectives, NORTE IA+ will develop and implement a set of practical measures, researching and analysing responsible use cases of language models through the use of machine translation in the three sectors, and exploring hybrid approaches. The first step involves mapping and systematising knowledge, practices and processes relating to generative AI, identifying and characterising the main uses of AI in education, health and industry, as well as biases, hallucinations, processes of exclusion and discrimination, and ethical and epistemological challenges within the domain of generative AI.
The second step involves a needs analysis across industry, health, and education. Stakeholders will be involved to identify linguistic, translational and intercultural issues underlying the use of generative AI; to identify technical and operational improvement needs in the use of existing commercial generative AI systems; and to diagnose training needs and requirements for public policy development. Thirdly, the project will focus on designing and implementing linguistic and translational solutions and will operationalise model-refinement techniques for specific domains.
This phase is followed by the design and implementation of a training programme for stakeholders across the three areas, service providers (specifically translators), and end-users. This training will be delivered through the design of a MOOC.
Finally, guidelines will be developed for the ethical, responsible, and transparent use of generative AI in the three areas, with validation by experts and stakeholders, aiming to enhance knowledge, practices, and processes related to generative AI.
