The WAVES project – Seawater and Wastewater: Turning Challenges into Resources – proposes an innovative approach to sustainable water management, promoting alternative water sources for agriculture and green hydrogen production, as well as resource recovery (nutrients from wastewater and minerals from seawater), and achieving energy neutrality in treatment systems. The project’s interdisciplinary approach addresses critical challenges such as water scarcity, water pollution and the high dependence on fossil energy sources, aligning with EU policies for ecological and energy transition, as well as the circular economy.
At the same time, and in addition to technological development, WAVES places strong emphasis on environmental awareness and education, promoting initiatives that strengthen society’s engagement in the preservation of water resources. By integrating sustainable energy solutions into water management, this approach will accelerate the transition towards a resilient, low-carbon economy. Through science-based educational programmes, the project adopts youth participatory action research (Y-PAR) methodologies, empowering students and communities to engage in more sustainable water management. WAVES proposes a disruptive and interdisciplinary approach, combining advanced technologies and digital modelling to create a new paradigm in water management. Its impact goes beyond fundamental research, generating scalable and commercially viable solutions to address global environmental and energy challenges. Coordinated by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, the project also involves FPCEUP through CIIE.
