The journal ESC – Educação, Sociedade & Culturas [Education, Society and Cultures] will dedicate a special edition to Health Education aiming to involve people who are related with education and health and who are concerned about the well-being of children and young people. Education is a key factor in health. The experience acquired in developing countries as in developed ones, indicates that formal education programs can significantly lead to improved health and well-being.

School is the election context for the development of prevention practices and health education. This is the baseline for the assumption that the promotion of health in schools, through participating processes, motivates students to take care of their own health and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

In fact, the school is the best place to provide formal or informal educational opportunities, and to supply multiple occasions to live health-related experiences.

This edition expects to expand the debate on Health and Education issues, providing theoretical tools and spreading research results that allow improvement of reflections and intervention practices.

ESC journal is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas [Centre for Research in Education] of the University of Porto, Portugal.

Since 1994, ESC publishes scholarly articles that explore significant ideas, issues, trends, policies and problems in education, and in related disciplines outside the education field, which contribute to the development of education theory and practice.

ESC aims to contribute to the development of the Education Sciences, helping to deepen the dialogue between cultures and disciplinary perspectives and to enlarge the public debate on educational and social issues. Specifically, ESC aims to disseminate the research produced across a range of education fields and other social sciences and humanities, focusing on the relationship between education and training and social issues. Moreover, it provides a forum for academics, researchers and practitioners to debate processes causing exclusion, inequalities and social injustices, and is committed to promoting the study of social and socio-educational policies and practices. Additionally ESC seeks to become an international platform for research in education.

Although ESC is based in Portugal, we very much welcome contributions that enhance academic debate from anywhere in the world. Articles should constitute original research, and should be methodologically sound, theoretically informed and of relevance to an international audience.

Articles are accepted and published in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish.

ESC publishes 3 issues per year, some of them special issues.

All  research  articles  in  ESC  have  undergone  rigorous  peer  review,  based  on  initial editor screening and refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.

Manuscripts should begin with a structured abstract, include up to 5 keywords, and should not exceed  8000  words  (for  further guidance  on  submission,  see  the  ESC  Webpage.  Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published. Articles for consideration must be sent by email attachment (in Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format files) to  ciie_edicoes@fpce.up.pt.
