CIIE - Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas
About CIIE
The Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences (FPCEUP) is a research institution supported by the Portuguese Funding Agency for Science and Technology (FCT/Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education). CIIE has long embraced its mission of developing high-quality research on key issues of educational processes and social change, in order to broaden the role of education in promoting equity, inclusion and active citizenship. Established in 1988, CIIE brings together excellent capacity and great experience of its team of researchers, having, especially in recent years, managed to achieve great success in attracting external funding, particularly from the European Union. Currently, 34 funded research and development projects are underway. CIIE is organised in nine strategic areas that are transversal scientific mobilising devices that guide all research efforts:
- Engagement of Vulnerable Young People in Education and Training
- Contemporary Educational Challenges for Migrants and Refugees
- Empowerment and Inclusion Through Digital Education and Arts
- Citizenship, Communication and Literacy in Health and Wellbeing
- Higher Education, Innovation and Diversity
- Community Education, Participation and Social Change
- Training, Equity and the Teaching Profession
- Evaluation and Public Policies in Education
- Pedagogical Management and Democratic Participation
The advanced training of young researchers and professionals is also one of the Centre's key pillars. The excellence of the Doctoral Programme in Educational Sciences of FPCEUP, co-promoted by CIIE, was recognised in 2012-2013 when it was distinguished as an FCT PhD Programme (the only one in this area in the 1st edition of the FCT’s competition). CIIE offers its doctoral and master’s students especially attractive conditions for advanced training and career development, in a stimulating, collaborative and internationalised environment. Students are integrated into research communities of practice (CoPin), research and training groups that are organised around one or more thematic areas of specialisation and research interests.
In the most recent external research assessment exercise (2018/2019), undertaken by FCT through evaluation panels of international scholars, CIIE achieved 'Excellent' (the highest score), ranking 1st (ex aequo) in the field of Educational Sciences for the quality and impact of its research, and being awarded the highest amount of multi-year funding from this panel for 2020-2023.
CIIE is supported, in the 2020-2023 period, by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., through national funds from the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES – Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior) – grant award no. UIDB/00167/2020 (base funding) and grant award no. UIDP/00167/2020 (programmatic funding).
