José Pedro Amorim is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP), researcher at the Center for Educational Research and Intervention (CIIE), and member of the board of the Paulo Freire Institute of Portugal. His main areas of interest are adult education, Freirean studies, university social responsibility, History of Education, among others. He has participated in several European (EU-USR, UNIBILITY, HE4u2, CertSRA/ESSA, YOUNG ADULLLT, SOLVINC, PODER, and CLEAR) and national funded projects (REduF, EDUPLACES, Education for Development in Public HE in Portugal). He is founding member of Arco Maior Association (which runs a socio-educative project for youth at risk), member of the Editorial Board of the Adult Learner Journal (Ireland), and advisor to APEFA - the Portuguese Association for the Education and Training of Adults.

Este projeto, dando continuidade ao estudo anterior (ver Projetos concluídos), almeja contribuir para o conhecimento, problematização e consolidação da Educação para o Desenvolvimento/Cidadania Global (ED/CG) no âmbito do ensino superior em Portugal. Compreende, por isso, (i) um estudo de experiências cocurriculares potencialmente relevantes para a promoção da ED/CG, (ii) um estudo sobre representações no âmbito da ED/CG e elementos valorizados em experiências de formação junto de estudantes e profissionais e (iii) a elaboração de uma proposta formativa cocurricular em ED/CG, de cariz transversal, dirigida a estudantes e profissionais docentes e não docentes.

SOLVINC | Solving intercultural conflicts with international students

In a context of growing nationalism and anti-immigration attitudes, higher education institutions (HEIs) are called to promote the development of inclusive societies (European Commission, 2017). Although internationalization is a priority for most HEIs, “internal internationalization” is still lacking, especially for international students.
SOLVINC aims to facilitate, therefore, the development of intercultural and conflict management skills among international students, local students, and HEI staff, as well as to implement intercultural student meetings in HEIs. To this end, the project uses the methodology of critical incidents of Cohen-Emerique (2015), adapting it to higher education.

A Educação para o Desenvolvimento no Ensino Superior público em Portugal: mapeamento de representações e análise de experiências [Education for Development in public higher education in Portugal: mapping of representations and analysis of experiences]

This project aims to contribute to the knowledge and problematisation of education for global development/ citizenship in the context of higher education (HE) in Portugal. To this end, it consists of two studies: one, cross-sectional, conducted with HE students, in order to map their representations in relation to education for global development/citizenship; another, in-depth analysis of existing curricular and/or co-curricular experiences. The results will be publicly discussed and recommendations will be given for the promotion of education for global development/citizenship in HE in Portugal.

YOUNG_ADULLLT | Policies Supporting Young People in their Life Course. A Comparative Perspective of Lifelong Learning and Inclusion in Education and Work in Europe

Most European Lifelong Learning (LLL) policies have been designed to create economic growth and, at the same time, guarantee social inclusion (EC 2010). First, we will study how different LLL policies are compatible with each other in terms of their orientations and objectives and how each policy considers the needs of ‘young adults’. Second, we will research the intended and unintended effects of policies on young adults. In this regard, we will look into relevant social developments such as life course de-standardisation processes and into an emerging new political economy of skills. Third, we will generate new knowledge about regional and local policymaking, with particular attention to actors, dynamics, and trends. By focusing on their regional/local context, we will elucidate the interaction and complementarity of LLL policies with other sectors of society, thus contributing to a better understanding of current fragmentation and discrepancies, in order to set parameters for future decision-making support systems.
The project will first contribute new knowledge of the impact of LLL policies on young adults’ life courses, yielding insights on the conditions, strategies, and necessities for policies to become effective. In addition, it will provide insights on the innovations and potentials they unlock, in particular with view to informal and non-formal learning to better address vulnerable groups. Second, the project contributes to a better understanding of the structural relationships and functional match between education/training and the labour market sectors. Third, the project will provide a thorough review of regional policies and initiatives in the countries studied, laying bare distinct dynamics and trends, but also mismatches and redundancies. In particular, the project aims at identifying successful programmes in terms of sustainable solutions in integrating labour market with, social inclusion as well as their transferability to other contexts.

HE4u2 | Integrating Cultural Diversity in Higher Education

HE4u2 will contribute to the reform of teaching and learning in higher education and the improvement of the retention and attainment of migrants and ethnic minority students.

There is a clear need and demand for training of teachers in relation to migrant students, for reform in the delivery of support for these learners, and in the intercultural dimension for all learners. HE4u2 will develop an integrated pedagogical approach to the intercultural dimension of existing curricula, CPD courses for staff, and policy recommendations.

HE4u2 will focus on the curricula and the teachers of adults in HE: they often provide access for disadvantaged groups, are student centered, have specialised support, and links to regional agencies. There is a concentration of expertise, a capacity to respond effectively to new needs, familiarity with employers, and experience in staff development; there are internal and national networks (all members of EUCEN) for mainstreaming innovation and influencing policy.

The project will:

Produce a meta-analysis of best practice from relevant research and tools across Europe and survey current learners from diverse backgrounds to obtain their views on the most important features of the curriculum.
Design, test and finalise innovative pedagogy in 3 different curricula in each of the 7 partner HEIs/countries and elaborate guidelines for developing such curricula by HE teachers and other relevant staff in 3 languages EN, FR and DE.
Design, test and finalise CPD courses incorporating ECTS, for HE teachers, adaptable to other settings.
Produce an analysis of the policy process and a policy paper with recommendations for HEIs, national and European agencies.
At each stage, the partners will work with policy actors at national level and EUCEN will do this at European level; in-depth transnational consultations will maximise the impact of the project on the national systems of HE and on the European policy agenda.

CertSRA/ESSA | Certificate in University Social Responsibility Auditing

Based on the Benchmark Standards for University Social Responsibility (USR) across the European Higher Education Area, created by the project EU-USR (see below, please), CertSRA/ESSA aims to certificate in USR auditing. Through the promotion of students’ effective involvement and agency in their learning process – having as partners of this project the unions of students not only of the universities involved but also of Europe and the United Kingdom –, this project has been training as Auditors of USR, through blended learning and awarding a level 6 EQF certification, 60 students from the three partner universities. This process culminates in four audits (already done) of different European HEIs, carried out by cross-national teams of the students involved.

EDUPLACES | Educating places: practices, voices, and pathways of inclusive education

EDUPLACES seeks to realize (i) what (institutional, community, local) processes and factors, action logics and partnerships contribute, from the point of view of the stakeholders involved, to build inclusive education practices and (ii) what (social, biographical, institutional) processes and factors support the interruption of the downward spiral of failure and drop-out/early school leaving, and favour the remobilization of youth to learn and build academic pathways to success.

UNIBILITY | University Meets Social Responsibility

Universities increasingly strive to strengthen their public commitment to the city they are located in, to the local economy and to the wider society through their research and higher education activities, in order to have a real impact on their local communities and improve the relevance of higher education in society. In 2015 a joint project between five European universities was launched to explore this topic –
coordinated by the University of Vienna, Postgraduate Centre (Austria) and funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the EU. UNIBILITY aims to: Enhance the commitment of universities in local communities; Develop strategies how universities can increase their social responsibility actively on student and researcher level; Develop practical service learning projects impacting the social environment; Develop training material and train university management and students in “University Social Responsibility” (USR); Create learning networks between universities and local business, the environmental sector and the social sector.

EU-USR | Comparative Research on University Social Responsibility in Europe and Development of a Community Reference Framework

EU-USR is a two year research project (2012-2014) co-financed by the European Commission Lifelong
Learning Programme, within the priority line of Erasmus multilateral projects (2011-2013): The social dimension of higher education. In particular, it intends to develop an action aimed to raise awareness and development of social responsibility of higher education institutions. The EU-USR project is conceived as a response to the need for a common social responsibility strategy for all European universities, and the current imbalance in terms of actions in social responsibilities among universities from different European regions. Its main purpose is to jointly design a European framework that allows the development of a European programme and networking between European universities in terms of social responsibility, to enhance university social action at European level and beyond plus the exchange of good practices on: Organizational governance; Human rights; Labor practices; The environment; Fair operating practices; Consumer issues; Community involvement and development, etc.
