Seminar Vocational Education for Young People in Portugal

The seminar "Vocational education for young people In Portugal: Tensions, challenges and opportunities in 50 years of democracy" will take place at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP) on 24 and 25 October 2024. Organised by the JEDI - Youth, Education, Diversity and Innovation research community of CIIE/FPCEUP and by the Teaching and Internationalisation Committee of the General Council of U.Porto, this seminar aims to debate vocational education based on various themes that contribute to its configuration, possible reconfigurations and, above all, its enhancement.

ABOUT

Vocational education for young people (VET) encompasses various forms of initial vocational education and training, providing professional and school certification through a variety of pathways such as professional courses (CP), apprenticeship courses (CA), education and training courses (CEF), adult education and training courses (EFA), among others. Since 25 April 1974, such education and training initiatives have been introduced, altered, or discontinued, reflecting different approaches to the needs and changes in the country's social and educational landscape. These changes are accompanied, on the one hand, by a significant representation of PE in Portugal's education indicators and, on the other hand, by the sometimes contrasting representations that the most diverse sectors of society have of it.

Aims
The main aim of this seminar is to contribute to knowledge, sharing, debate and valorisation of vocational education for young people. With this in mind, the following objectives are set:
- To present and debate the historical, social and cultural evolution of initial vocational education for young people after 25 April 1974;
- To raise awareness of the various types of initial vocational education for young people that currently exist in Portugal;
- To present the work carried out by training organisations (EP, CF, ES) and by vocational education students;
- Discuss the advantages and challenges of this education route for individuals, the labour market and higher education;
- Debate the meaning and implications of the special competition for entry to higher education for holders of dual qualification courses in secondary education and specialised artistic education.

Among the topics covered at this seminar are the historical, social and cultural evolution of vocational education in the 50 years of democracy, and its advantages and challenges for people, the world of work and higher education. At the same time, there will be an exhibition of the work carried out by various organisations in education and training.
