DRU Project at Exhibition on the Europeanisation of Higher Education

Could universities be the key to revitalising democracy?

Coordinated by Amélia Veiga, the DRU – Democratic Roles of Universities project is featured in the exhibition “The Europeanisation of the Higher Education System in Portugal — a profound transformation in education and research”, which opened on 9 May at Porto City Hall, as part of the celebrations marking 40 years of Portugal’s accession to the European Union.

Funded by Horizon Europe / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Staff Exchanges (MSCA-SE), DRU brings together partners from nine countries across three continents. The project aims to produce critical knowledge, develop innovative experiences and create practical tools to support higher education institutions in translating democratic values into concrete institutional practices that can be transferred to society.

The exhibition traces the evolution of European higher education policies — from the Schuman Declaration to the Bologna Process — and concludes with a forward-looking reflection on the role of universities in building more participatory, inclusive and democratically robust societies.
