About the Fulbright Commission
The Fulbright Programme, currently administered in more than 150 countries, was created in the USA in 1946 at the proposal of Senator J. William Fulbright with the aim of promoting mutual understanding, the sharing of ideas and the search for solutions to global problems through the international exchange of students and teachers.
In Portugal, the programme is administered by the Fulbright Commission (Comissão Cultural Luso-Americana). Since the Fulbright Programme began in Portugal in 1960, more than 1,300 Portuguese students and professors and 750 Americans have received Fulbright scholarships in a variety of academic fields. The binational character of the Fulbright Commission is reflected in the representation of the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Portugal in its administration and in the funding of its activities.
