There is a call for applications for a research grant for a doctoral student under the project “CONSTATED: The Social Construction of Education Statistics” (ref. 2023.14129.PEX), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and taking place at the Center for Educational Research and Intervention (CIIE) of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP), under the coordination of Professor Tiago Neves. 

The CONSTATED project aims to shed light on the processes and power dynamics that make up education statistics (specifically grade inflation and retention and drop-out rates). To do this, it asks the numbers: how were they produced? How were these figures arrived at (and not others)? Ultimately, it asks: how do statistics and society constitute each other? Thus, this research project addresses a fundamental but little-studied and often neglected issue: the social construction of education statistics.

 Admission requirements:

• Master degree in Educational Sciences or in another area of the Social Sciences or the Humanities relevant to the development of the project (e.g., Psychology, Sociology)
•  Be enrolled in a doctoral programme in Education Sciences, a requirement to be proven at the date of hiring.
•  Proficient command of Portuguese language (only applicable if the candidate is not a native speaker of Portuguese, in which case he/she must submit a supporting document).
  
  
  Preferred requirements (for which documentary evidence must be provided):
  
  
  
•   Knowledge and experience of using qualitative research methodologies;
•  Research work experience as part of an academic degree or funded research project, using qualitative methodologies (document analysis and conduction of interviews and/or focus groups), including the collection and analysis of empirical material; the research tasks in which the candidate was involved must be specified.
•   (Co-)authorship of scientific publications in the field of education and/or other social sciences.
