Escola Secundária Gaia Nascente
The 10th, 11th and 12th grade students of the Gaia Nascente School Group, together with their Geography, History and Citizenship and Development teachers, debated phenomena associated with climate change that have intensified in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia throughout the first half of 2022.
After carrying out questionnaires in the community, the young people focused their research on the impacts of climate change on bird migration, which emerged as the most worrying local climate problem.
These problems, as well as their causes and consequences for the region, were the starting point for the Collaborative Climate Labs (Cicli-Labs) sessions with the aim of fostering dialogue and the co-creation of actionable solutions.
To this end, three Cicli-Labs sessions promoted networking activities between actors from different sectors, including Paulo Costa, from Onda Verde - Associação Juvenil de Ambiente e Aventura; Dr. Susana Castanheira, from the Área Metropolitana do Porto (AMP); Dr. Paula Lobo, from the Junta de Freitas (Parish Council). Paula Lobo, from the Oliveira do Douro Parish Council; Gabriela Resenda, from the Student Climate Strike (GCE); Paulo Faria, from the Gaia Biological Park, linked to the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council; and, finally, Dr. Isabel Macedo Pinto, from the Psychology Center at the University of Porto.
The aim of these sessions was to build a collaborative climate adaptation plan, focusing on the research work carried out by the young students and promoting knowledge sharing and discussions on citizenship, politics and climate.
The three CiCli-Labs sessions took place on May 11, May 25 and June 1 in the library of the Gaia Nascente School. First, the young people created the Climate Problem Tree, representing the causes and effects of bird migrations in relation to climate change. From this, they discussed possible solutions to put into practice.
At the CiCli-Labs, some of the students' suggestions included: promoting voluntary waste collection actions and planning activities in partnership with other schools, thus creating a space for sharing with younger students. The possibility of penalizing those who don't comply with current environmental legislation was also discussed.
Next year, these proposals for solving the climate problem in Vila Nova de Gaia will be followed up by articulating strategies for implementing the ideas discussed in the CiCli-Labs.
The aim will be to develop, through dialogue, regionally articulated and widely disseminated strategies to address the local climate problems pointed out by the young students of Gaia Nascente.
Finally, it is hoped that these laboratories will point to possible collaborative paths for climate adaptation to strengthen local resilience in this municipality.
