Worldwide, internationalisation of higher education (IoHE) is under continuous development particularly in English-speaking countries. In Europe, some countries are also striving to become more international and to attract higher numbers of migrant students. However, most European countries present different levels of IoHE, and factors like economic development or certain historical aspects, such as having a colonial past or a tradition in international education, may impact internationalisation. This project explores IoHE in Portugal, where recent demands for a competitive internationalisation model clash with the existing model based mainly on cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries.
