This research is based on a case study of the teaching of music and drama in the first cycle of primary school, which takes place in schools in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and where, through the Coordinating Office for Artistic Education (GCEA), special attention is paid to teacher training in these areas. Although art education in the first cycle is regulated by Decree-Law no. 344 of 1990 and forms part of the curriculum for this level of education, in reality it has only sometimes been put into practice in Portuguese schools.
RAM's primary schools are a particular case in this respect, as musical and dramatic expressions have been consistently implemented at this level of education since 1980.
The recent guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education regarding the way in which the teaching of expressions takes place in primary schools on the mainland, by bringing this issue back into the public debate, make this research even more pertinent and pressing. Therefore, in-depth knowledge of the project taking place in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is of the utmost importance in order to understand, on the one hand, how arts education can be implemented consistently throughout the country and, on the other, what its contribution is to the training of young people and teachers.
This research will use a case study methodology. To this end, data will be collected through bibliographical and documentary research, direct observation, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The data collected will be subjected to qualitative and quantitative content analysis. To this end, we have a team of researchers with scientific and pedagogical training in the areas of educational sciences, music education and dramatic expression.
