The improvement of educational systems — with a particular emphasis on equity issues — has been a political priority of EU state members and are necessary to achieve (some of) ONU's development goals. In this domain, research has focused more on differences between countries, and less on the characteristics associated with a differential efficacy between schools in equity promotion within each country. This caveat is particularly severe in the Portuguese context.
Thus, this project aims to achieve three goals. The first is to identify, in the Portuguese context, equitable schools, that is, schools that throughout the years have been able to diminish gaps between students' academic achievement, in comparison to similar schools regarding their students' sociocultural background. The second one, through conducting case studies of more and less equitable schools, aims to characterize practices — organizational, curricular, pedagogical-didactical, of institutional climate and of its relation with social contexts — that appear promising in equity promotion. The third aims to test the efficacy of the identified factors through a quasi-experimental intervention in less equitable schools.
