Norberto Ribeiro is an FCT-funded Research Fellow (proposal reference: https://doi.org/10.54499/CEECIND/02115/2018/CP1544/CT000) at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (University of Porto, Portugal). He has been actively involved in research since 2006, in national and international projects (funded by the European Commission and the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology, FCT). His research focuses on citizenship education and youth civic and political participation. He has been employed on several large-scale European research projects, including an FP7 project, which examined the constraints and opportunities for civic and political participation of four specific groups at risk of political disengagement (i.e., young people, women, minorities and migrants); and a Horizon 2020 project, who analysed the factors influencing the perspectives of young people on Europe and how young people engage in society. Currently, he is a member of the research team of the project “SINCRONY: interSectIonal iNClusion in delibeRation and participatiON with Youth” (GAP-101132459), funded by Horizon Europe Framework Programme, call: “Standing up for democracy” (HORIZON-CL2-2023-DEMOCRACY-01). This project aims to include youth, both marginalized and not, in deliberative and participative processes within local communities, integrating an intersectional lens. Norberto Ribeiro has made a unique contribution to the field of citizenship education and youth civic and political participation by publishing as the first author of several book chapters and articles in top-tier journals, such as the European Journal of Higher Education; Education, Citizenship and Social Justice; European Journal of Developmental Psychology; Journal of Political Science Education; Urban Education; and Journal of Youth Studies. He has presented on the subject at several international conferences in Europe. Norberto Ribeiro is a Full Member of the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE). At FPCEUP, he has lectured on "Ethics and Work in Education" and on the "Research Methodologies in Adult Education and Training" units course on the Master Programme in Education; and the curricular units "Introduction to Social Sciences", "Introduction to Ethics and Deontology in Education", "Children and adolescents as political actors: Building a participatory citizenship in schools and sports contexts", and "Workshop on Writing" on the First Degree of Educational Sciences.

SINCRONY: interSectIonal iNClusion in delibeRation and participatiON with Youth
SINCRONY aims to ensure the meaningful inclusion of youth who experience social disadvantage and marginalisation in deliberative and participatory processes (DPP). The project will target the factors and processes responsible for reproducing political inequalities in youth engagement in deliberative and participatory processes based on intergenerational and intragenerational power imbalances and youth intersectional positionalities. The goal is to offer policymakers, public servants, researchers, teachers, youth workers, facilitators of deliberative processes, and youth CSOs concrete instruments, guidelines, and solutions to renovate deliberative and participatory practices implemented in public governance and schools.
The consortium of nine partners, consisting of seven universities, the ALDA European network of local democracies, and an SME focusing on communication and dissemination, will contribute multidisciplinary and multi-methodological expertise in psychology, education, sociology, political science, gender studies, social research, intersectionality, and media analysis. A Stakeholders’ Collaborative Network, including expert advisors, local municipality representatives, schools, civil society, and youth organisations, will also be engaged throughout the project.
Together, they will: (a) enhance the inclusivity of deliberative practices in two local municipalities (in Italy and Finland); (b) design, test, and deliver an innovative, co-constructed intersectional approach called the Intersectional Participatory Action Research-and-Deliberation, piloted in seven local municipalities and four schools (in Italy, Portugal, the UK, and Denmark); (c) design participatory formats; (d) create tools; (e) define ethical guidelines. By improving the democratic quality, inclusiveness, effectiveness, and legitimacy of deliberative and participatory processes, the project will contribute to greater social justice for all youth.
Safe from Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SfSGBV)

Play4Life: Jovens Atletas como Ativistas no Desporto [Play4life: Young athletes as sports activists]
This study aims to understand how participation in sports contexts is associated with the development of young athletes as citizens committed to building more inclusive societies. It seeks to: a) explore the potential of sport to promote socio-educational results linked to the development of civic/political competences and democratic citizenship; b) encourage the participation of athletes in the development of actions in/with the community, increasing the sense of belonging and the levels of participation in individual and collective actions.
Interim evaluation study of the Cidadãos Ativ@s Programme results
The key objective of the Programme is to strengthen civil society and active citizenship and to empower vulnerable groups. In order to promote the sustainability and capacity of the NGOs, the Programme seeks to support projects in the following areas: i) Democracy, active citizenship, good governance and transparency; ii) Human rights and equal treatment through combating any discrimination on the grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity; iii) Social justice and inclusion of vulnerable groups; iv) Capacity building of NGOs.
Healthy Waters - Identification, Elimination, Social Awareness and Education of Water Chemical and Biological Micropollutants with Health and Environmental Implications
O projeto “Healthy Waters - Identification, Elimination, Social Awareness and Education of Water Chemical and Biological Micropollutants with Health and Environmental Implications” é financiado pelo Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER), através do NORTE 2020 – Programa Operacional Regional do Norte (Norte2020 - Projetos Integrados ICDT). Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Norte. O projeto ‘Healthy Waters’ tem como objetivo identificar e prevenir a ocorrência de contaminantes com implicações ambientais e de saúde (poluentes emergentes, bactérias resistentes a antibióticos e seus genes de resistência a antibióticos associados, vírus e outros contaminantes relevantes) na água que atualmente é tratada como resíduo e que pode ser reutilizada em produção sustentável de alimentos. Especificamente, o projeto visa explorar as potencialidades do design inteligente de materiais e metodologias feitos ‘à medida’ para identificar micropoluentes e comparar as formas da sua eliminação em águas e efluentes por meio de processos de oxidação / separação e biorremediação. A transferência de conhecimento para a sociedade civil (Ciência Cidadã) também está contemplada no projeto, para que os cidadãos possam identificar onde estes poluentes existem no seu quotidiano e tenham também maior consciência dos seus hábitos de consumo, ficando não só mais cientes deste tema, mas também mais habilitados a identificar e a discutir problemas ambientais específicos na sua comunidade. Essa transferência de conhecimento ocorrerá no contexto da educação formal (ensino básico e secundário, envolvendo investigadores, alunos e professores), utilizando uma lógica de investigação-ação participativa. The impact of extracurricular participation experiences on the academic success and employability of university students
The Political Participation of Portuguese Youth
Projeto financiado pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, que pretende desenvolver uma análise comparativa da participação política dos/as jovens portugueses, com base nos dados do European Social Survey e de um inquérito representativo (1500 entrevistas presenciais). O Estudo envolve também uma perspetiva qualitativa que procurará: i) analisar a estratégia dos partidos políticos para a mobilização de jovens, através de observação documental e entrevistas a líderes e membros partidários, e ii) fazer o levantamento sintético de casos de estudo de novas formas de ativismo jovem, não convencionais e expressivas (artísticas/performativas). Research and evaluation of the "Desafia-TE" project
Desafia-TE is aimed at young people aged 14-18. His main objective is to give young people the opportunity to participate in a set of activities, promoted by local partners, enabling them to develop transversal competences relevant to their personal development, social integration and construction of the life project.

The Impact of the Quality of Extracurricular Participation Experiences on Academic Performance and Professional Insertion of University Students
As experiências de participação cívica e política têm sido recorrentemente associadas ao desenvolvimento de competências pessoais e interpessoais e à maturação da cidadania democrática. Adicionalmente, a investigação tem salientado que as experiências de participação extracurriculares estão associadas a um maior sucesso cívico, profissional e educativo dos/as jovens, reforçando a tese dos benefícios inquestionáveis dessa participação. Investigação desenvolvida nos últimos anos em Portugal tem desafiado essa conceção de participação, argumentando que as experiências com menor qualidade desenvolvimental podem ter efeitos negativos sobre o desenvolvimento político dos/as jovens. A investigação que se propõe tem como objetivo produzir conhecimento sobre o impacto da qualidade das experiências extracurriculares no desempenho académico e inserção profissional de jovens universitários.
Research and evaluation of the "Young Mayor" project
Projeto de consultoria e coordenação científica prestado à Câmara Municipal de Santa Maria da Feira relativamente ao projeto ‘Jovem Autarca’. É um projeto que irá decorrer até março de 2018 e tem como objetivos principais os seguintes: i) Analisar o impacto do projeto sobre os/as jovens participantes e a comunidade educativa e social envolvente; e ii) Analisar a adequabilidade da metodologia adotada na implementação do projeto.
Constructing AcTive CitizensHip with European Youth: Policies, Practices, Challenges and Solutions
The proposal will investigate young people’s views of the EU and of their role in building the EU through their participatory practices at EU, national, regional and local levels. These issues will be examined from an interdisciplinary perspective (Political Sciences, Sociology, History, Media and Communications, Education, Psychology) as building blocks for a new and groundbreaking conceptualization and theoretical model of youth active citizenship in the EU, including “psychological” citizenship and practices of social and political engagement.
To achieve this aim, the proposal will adopt an innovative approach combining traditional theoretical hypothesis testing with empirical-phenomenological analysis and allowing to integrate the perspectives of young people, as co-producers of knowledge, with those of researchers and other stakeholders. A wide range of research methods will be used including documentary and media analysis, interviews and focus groups, a cross-national longitudinal study, ethnographic case studies of participatory practices and a socially innovative intervention. These quantitative and qualitative methods will allow to develop a new, robust and cutting-edge conceptualization of youth active citizenship in the EU and new evidence-based multilevel integrated theoretical model.
This approach will offer a multifaceted understanding of the different factors influencing the perspectives of “native EU citizens” and the ways in which they engage in society, leading to groundbreaking changes in the ways in which youth engagement, participation and active citizenship are understood. Moreover, the project will provide policy makers with a set of evidence-based ideas, recommendations and instruments to integrate young people’s perspectives into various areas of policy-making. The findings of the project will thus fully cover the challenges, scope and impact of bringing the EU closer to its young citizens and boosting their participation.
SIMETRIA – Project for the Promotion of Social and Nutritional Equality
É um projeto financiado pelo Programa de Iniciativas em Saúde Pública (EEA and Norway Grant) que foi desenvolvido pela Liga Portuguesa de Profilaxia Social (LPPS) em parceria com a Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto (FPCEUP), e que envolveu, entre outras valências relacionadas com a melhoria da saúde e a redução das desigualdades em saúde, um processo de consultoria a organizações de cariz social, bem como de formação aos agentes operativos dessas mesmas organizações.
Opportunities and constraints for the exercise of citizenship of young immigrants: the case of Angolans in Portugal
PIDOP - Processes Influencing Democratic Ownership and Participation
This project will examine the processes which influence democratic ownership and participation in eight European states. It will draw on the disciplines of Politics, Sociology, Social Policy, Psychology and Education to examine macro-level contextual factors (including historical, political, electoral, economic and policy factors), proximal social factors (including familial, educational and media factors) and psychological factors (including motivational, cognitive, attitudinal and identity factors) which facilitate and/or inhibit civic and political engagement and participation.
The research will be ground-breaking in incorporating the psychology of the individual citizen within its scope, and it will be distinctive in addressing the psychological processes through which political, societal and social factors have their effects upon citizens’ civic and political engagement and participation.
Young people, women, minorities and migrants will be examined as four specific groups at risk of political disengagement. The research will focus on the differences, as well as the overlap, between civic and political engagement, and on both direct and representative participation.
An innovative multi-level process model of civic and political engagement and participation will be constructed, which will explain how and why different forms and interpretations of democratic ownership and participation develop or are hampered amongst citizens living in different European countries and contexts, with particular attention being paid to the relevant phenomena at regional, national and EU levels.
Appropriate stakeholders at regional, national and EU levels will be involved in all stages of the work, to ensure that the research addresses issues of direct concern to these stakeholders, and to ensure that the policy implications and recommendations which emerge from the research meet the needs of these stakeholders and are disseminated appropriately to them.
