The kick-off meeting for the project "SCIREARLY: Policies and Practices Based on Scientific Research for Reducing Underachievement and Early School Leaving in Europe" took place on 7 and 8 November in Bilbao, in the Basque Country (Spain), with the participation of CIIE members Pedro D. Ferreira and Henrique Vaz.
This project, funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe R&D framework programme (project no. 101061288) (topic HORIZON-CL2-2021-TRANSFORMATIONS-01-04 - "Addressing poor learning outcomes in basic skills and early school leaving at the national, regional and local level in Europe"), will run from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2025.
Led by the University of Deusto and involving partner institutions from Portugal, Greece, Italy, Malta, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom, SCIREARLY is underway at CIIE/FPCEUP, whose team is coordinated by Pedro D. Ferreira and co-coordinated by Isabel Menezes. The team includes Henrique Vaz, Eunice Macedo, Sofia Castanheira Pais and Carmo Cabral Gouveia.
The kick-off meeting was an essential step in getting the work underway and an opportunity for the partners to get to know each other and better understand their role in the development of SCIREARLY.
Among other responsibilities, CIIE/FPCEUP will coordinate Work Package 5, entitled "Succeeding Against all the Odds: Socioeconomic Disadvantage, Roma, Migrants and Refugees", developed between April 2024 and June 2025.
ABOUT SCIREARLY
SCIREARLY (2022-2025) aims to identify, systematise and replicate successful practices that have been proven to reduce underachievement in the acquisition of basic skills and have mitigated the phenomenon of school dropout related to students' socioeconomic background. SCIREARLY will (1) examine the factors, including the influence of quality early childhood education and care (ECEC), on learning outcomes, (2) measure and verify the impact of these determinants on vulnerable groups, identify successful pathways to overcome it, (3) map and replicate the most successful practices in addressing low achievement in basic skills, (4) develop a diagnostic and quality improvement framework and tool for ECEC to boost quality learning outcomes for primary and secondary school pupils, and (5) analyse and propose transferable and scalable policy measures that have proven to reduce school dropout.
