In order to understand factors influencing the academic pathways of university students, namely in terms of success, failure and withdrawal, a research team from four universities (Évora, Porto, Minho and Lisbon) is developing a project that will produce knowledge on this subject. In a first phase, this project analyzed, from the construction of a database, courses of students who entered in these four universities for the first time in 2009/2010, in the first cycle, and what happened to them until 2014/2015, from an academic point of view. This phase of the project allowed knowing, statistically, which variables influenced the courses of these students. In a second phase, of qualitative orientation, case studies will allow to deepen the knowledge on the factors that influence the different students' routes.
