Recognising a ‘full range of purposes’ for Higher Education (i.e., career development, promotion of knowledge and research, personal development and citizenship), political and academic authorities are voicing a growing concern about the way higher education institutions are promoting effective student development in order to face the global challenges that increasingly demand highly skilled and socially engaged people. Extracurricular participation experiences have been recurrently associated with the development of personal and social skills that are central for employability and democratic citizenship. The purpose of this research is to produce knowledge about the impact of extracurricular participation experiences on the academic performance and employability of university students. It is intended that this knowledge contributes to the design of policies, projects and more informed interventions, in order to operate transformations that strengthen the relations of young people with academic performance and employability
