HE4u2 contributed to reforming teaching and learning in higher education and improving retention and outcomes for migrant and ethnic minority students.
There was a clear need and demand for teacher training about migrant students, for reform in the provision of support for these students, and for the intercultural dimension for all students. HE4u2 developed an integrated pedagogical approach to the intercultural dimension of existing curricula, ongoing training courses for staff and policy recommendations.
HE4u2 focused on adult curricula and teachers in higher education: these programmes often provided access to disadvantaged groups, were student-centred, and had specialist support and links to regional agencies. There was a concentration of expertise, a capacity to respond effectively to new needs, familiarity with employers and experience in staff development; internal and national networks (all EUCEN members) that mainstreamed innovation and influenced policy.
The project carried out the following actions: a)Produced a meta-analysis of best practice research and relevant tools across Europe and surveyed current students from diverse backgrounds to obtain their views on the most important features of the curriculum; b)Designed, tested and finalised innovative pedagogy in 3 different curricula in each of the 7 partner HEIs/countries and drafted guidelines for the development of these curricula by higher education teachers and other relevant staff in 3 languages: English, French and German; c)Designed, tested and finalised continuing education courses incorporating ECTS, for higher education teachers, adaptable to other contexts; d)Produced an analysis of the policy process and a policy document with recommendations for HEIs, national and European agencies.
At each stage, partners worked with policy actors at national level and EUCEN did so at European level; in-depth transnational consultations maximised the project's impact on national higher education systems and the European policy agenda.
