The project deepened the collaboration between two research groups, taking the theme of the curriculum as a starting point. Since the mid-1990s, the subject of the curriculum has taken center stage around the world, with educational policies being based on a tripod involving the control of curricula at the national level, the creation of centralized assessment systems, and interventions in teacher training (Ball, 1998). This process crossed various levels of education in Portugal and Brazil, from basic education to higher education, including adult education devices, at the interface between the contexts of policies and practices, and between the local-national and global-transnational levels. The transfer of meanings from one context/level to another was subject to interpretative slippages and processes of contestation (Ball & Bowe, 1992), which the project explored, taking explicit account of the diversity in the experiences of the two countries.
