Internationalisation has been on the agenda of higher education since the 20th century. More recently, though, its demand has intensified under neoliberal policies through top-down strategies targeting internationalisation as an integrating part of universities’ strategic mission. Broadly speaking, internationalisation regards the process of promoting an international, intercultural or global dimension into the purpose, functions or ways of delivery of tertiary education. Teacher education has not been immune to internationalisation policies and dynamics in this setting. The internationalisation of teacher education (ITE) emerges together with the recognition of teaching as a cosmopolitan work and profession amidst a scenario of interconnectedness fostered by the globalisation of dimensions centred on economy and culture. The need to internationalise teacher education then unveils a scenario of growing mobility of people, resulting in environments characterised by linguistic and cultural diversity. Although much has been said about the internationalisation of higher education, including the Portuguese context, little is known about how teacher education has engaged with the dimension of internationalisation. Therefore, in the scope of this project, we intend to further contribute to the knowledge of ITE in Portugal by identifying how key stakeholders (e.g., teacher educators) conceptualise it and mapping out strategies already in place, including those in the domain of internationalisation at home. To meet our goals, we have designed an exploratory study of a qualitative nature, focused on master's degrees in teaching for the 3rd cycle of basic education, that includes document analysis, interviews with teacher educators and focus groups with student teachers from all over the country, including the islands.
